I recently attended a workshop in Calgary with a select group of my peers who specialize in facial rejuvenation. I learned new techniques using Juvederm Voluma for contouring cheeks, temples and the chin. Although this product has had a lot of media attention in the USA recently, touted as a “new filler”, it was approved in Canada years ago. I have been injecting it for several years, and I love the soft, natural, safe, longlasting results.
I also learned new ways of using Juvederm Volbella for softening lipstick lines, defining the lip border, and enhancing the lip shape. Volbella is great for nonsurgical nose shaping also. These products use the new “Vycross” technology, which results in a longer lasting result: up to one year for some patients!! The effects are instant, and with less lip swelling than any other lip filler. The lips are hydrated, plumped and youthful looking.
Call us to book a cosmetic consultation to discuss what Voluma and Volbella can achieve for you.
Did you know that excessive sweating called hyperhidrosis affects about 3% of Canadians? That’s roughly 952,000 Canadians!
Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition described as sweating beyond what is necessary to cool the body. It most often affects the underarms, hands, feet, and face. Many people with hyperhidrosis are unaware there is treatment available.
There are 2 types of hyperhidrosis:
1. Primary hyperhidrosis – also called focal hyperhidrosis. This affects specific areas such as underarms, palms and soles. It is caused by a malfunction within the sympathetic nervous system, that overstimulates the nerves that cause the sweat glands to produce more sweat.
2. Secondary hyperhidrosis – also called generalized hyperhidrosis. This usually affects the entire body, and is caused by medication or another medical condition (such as menopause, thyroid disease, infection).
In my practice, I assess primary hyperhidrosis using the following Hyperhidrosis Disease Severity Scale:
- My sweating is never noticeable and never interferes with my daily activities
- My sweating is tolerable but sometimes interferes with my daily activities
- My sweating is barely tolerable and frequently interferes with my daily activities
- My sweating is intolerable and always interferes with my daily activities
The good news is that I can help you find a solution to focal hyperhidrosis. Clinical strength topical antiperspirants are typically first line of therapy. I am an expert at using Botox injections to control focal sweating. Botox injections will interrupt the signal from the nerve to the sweat gland, and usually result in 80% or more improvement in sweating for approximately 5-7 months. My patients often report their Botox hyperhidrosis treatments are “life changing”!

EXFOLIATE YOUR WAY TO HEALTHY AND
SILKY-SMOOTH SKIN IN 2 SIMPLE STEPS WITH
ALYRIA’S EXFOLIATING CREAMS
As a female cosmetic dermatologist, I am constantly asked about skin care products to improve skin health. I consider the following 5 items essential to optimize your skin care.
Sunscreen: look for SPF 30 or greater, “broad spectrum”, UVA and UVB protection
Essential Growth Factors: this is like “toothpaste” – something you should use everyday. Usually a serum, and will contain peptides, anti-oxidants, and growth factors. I like to apply mine under my sunscreen every morning.
Retinol: the non-prescription retinol products promote collagen more gently and with less dryness than a prescription strength retinoid
Exfoliate: you can achieve this with chemical exfoliators such as glycolic acid or salicylic acid, or by mechanical exfoliation such as microdermabrasion or cleansing scrubs
Targeted Ingredients: is your skin dry? Do you have fine lines? Unwanted pigmentation? At O’Neill Cosmetic Dermatology my staff and I can give you an individualized skin care program to restore moisture, radiance and tone to your skin.
A simplified road map to improved skin health can be created for you!
Even if the weather channel is telling us we may be still shoveling snow, today is officially the first day of spring–and time to start looking forward to warmer weather.
Get your sunscreen ready!
Although this has been the winter of the “polar vortex”, and the thermometer has been in the sub-zero zone since December, I am the eternal optimist wishing for early spring. It’s time to start thinking of your skin’s “Spring Preview”. Beautiful skin needs planning and preparation starting now.
Make sure your morning routine includes a sunscreen: I suggest a minimum SPF 30. Add an antioxidant serum under your sunscreen to boost it’s effectiveness. As the days become warmer, you may consider a lighter consistency for your moisturizer or night cream. I find most of us can tolerate stronger exfoliating agents and more frequent use of retinol products as the humidity rises.
Want to get rid of your brown freckles, broken blood vessels and improve your pores? Book a series of Intense Pulsed Light treatments. Also known as IPL or photorejuvenation, this is a safe and effective way to create an even skin tone. Want to freshen up your complexion? Microdermabrasion or chemical peels may be the solution.
Tired of worrying about unwanted hair? Laser hair removal is the answer.
